A letter on 29th March,2023. signed by Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Yoshua Bengio, Gary Marcus, and several thousand other AI experts, researchers and industry leaders has set the cat among the pigeons , in the wake of release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT4 version, reports of their work on GPT5 and beyond.
“…..we call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium”.
For the reason, “ Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. This confidence must be well justified and increase with the magnitude of a system’s potential effects. OpenAI’s recent statement regarding artificial general intelligence states that “At some point, it may be important to get independent review before starting to train future systems, and for the most advanced efforts to agree to limit the rate of growth of compute used for creating new models.” We agree. That point is now” 2489 plus experts have joined till date.
Antagonists have opined, “ the letter fosters unhelpful alarm around hypothetical dangers, leading to misinformation and disinformation about actual, real-world concerns. Others pointed out the unrealistic nature of a “pause” and said the letter did not address current efforts towards global AI regulation and legislation.
As a legal practitioner, where does one stand? For once,one is delighted We in the Judiciary lag behind. Despite Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud speaking about the e-initiatives — virtual justice clock, justIS mobile app 2.0, digital court and s3WaaS websites of district courts — that were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Nov 26,2022, Law Day.
“We have been adopting technology to improve the working of courts. It is of supreme importance and necessity that courts are remodelled to reach out to people instead of people reaching out to courts in their quest for justice,” the CJI said. “To ensure that courts reach out to people, it is essential that the process of litigation is simplified and made citizen centric,” he said.
What does the Open Letter from AI experts mean then? What are we talking about? ChatGPT4 is an advanced version of ChatGPT, which is a natural language processing model developed by OpenAI. As a practitioner, one did not do a Kevin Roose who had a two-hour session with Bing in the beta. During the session, Roose relates, the program revealed a personality under the sobriquet “Sydney,” professed love for Roose, and proceeded to make aggressive insinuations about Roose’s marriage. And cajoled Roose to quit his marriage and ‘move in with it’. Roose relates that he was “deeply unsettled, even frightened” as a result of the exchange.

It was ‘deeply unsettling and frightening’ as the orders were in ‘perfect legalese’ and in accord with ‘settled legal position’ as one was exposed to. And it ‘drafted an affidavit for stay’ on ‘given facts’ in a succinct manner, not missing a fact omit detail. It’s executive summary was much better than mine.
The only satisfactory facet in the ‘scary experience’ was its vocabulary. It was pedestrian with no purple prose, we are capable of. No lovely turn of phrase. It fell short. That is a salve.
One felt good that ‘e-initiatives’ of Judiciary, were still baby steps. At the end of one’s ChatGpt experience, one felt that Judicial practices had yet to reach the tipping point, for thousands of legal practitioners and retired justices and academicians to send an Open Letter to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud to ‘immediately pause’ on ‘e-initiatives’, as the role of AI was still too minimal to worry about replacement of man by machine!
