The prestigious Bhavaarpanam festival returns with a celebration of Indian classical arts that blends tradition with innovation. This year, the festival is highlighted by two exceptional presentations: “Pluti,” a philosophical dance narrative, and “Tāl Fry,” an exploration of rhythmic traditions across classical and folk music.
The Bhavaarpanam festival, a tribute to the legacy of Guru Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer, has long been a platform for showcasing both traditional and contemporary expressions of Indian classical music and dance. It is hosted by Kala Sadhanalaya and curated by Revathi Ramachandran. With its roots firmly anchored in classical traditions, this year’s festival promises to push the boundaries of artistic expression while honoring the rich cultural heritage of India.
Pluti: the leap
On August 28th, 2024, at 6:15 PM, “Pluti” takes the stage with a captivating narrative that explores the evolution of human consciousness. Conceptualized and choreographed by Manasvini K.R., the solo- thematic dance performance is an allegorical journey depicted through the stories of five animals—the frog, deer, earthworm, parrot, and cow—each representing a phase of human consciousness.
Drawing inspiration from Advaita Vedanta, “Pluti” uses these animals as metaphors for different states of awareness: from ignorance and illusion to restraint, renunciation, and finally, spiritual realization. The performance is enhanced by a stirring musical score composed by violin Vidwan Lalgudi GJR Krishnan, creating a multisensory experience that delves deep into the quest for truth and happiness.
Through evocative choreography and symbolic storytelling, “Pluti” offers a unique blend of philosophical depth and artistic beauty, inviting the audience to reflect on the journey of self-discovery. Sri Madhusudhan Sai who is the founder of SSSUHE will be presiding over the event.
Tāl Fry: A Rhythmic Celebration
The following evening, on August 29th, 2024, at 6:30 PM, “Tāl Fry” brings rhythm to the forefront with a performance that fuses classical and folk traditions. This innovative ensemble consists of six artists—Varun Rajashekaran (Ghatam), Soumendra Goswami (Sitar), Saptak Sharma (Tabla), Ravindra Rajput (Cajon/Flute), Manohar Balachandirane (Mridangam), and Mahavir Chandrawal (Dhol/Naal)—each contributing their unique expertise.
“Tāl Fry” delves into the limitless possibilities of rhythm, creating a soundscape that ranges from the intricate patterns of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music to the spontaneous vibrancy of folk traditions. The ensemble’s eclectic mix of instruments, combined with visually engaging light design, offers an immersive experience that connects with the audience on a primal level.
Having debuted to acclaim in July 2024, “Tāl Fry” is a celebration of rhythm’s power to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. The performance invites everyone—whether a classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer—to enjoy the universal language of rhythm.
